Lip Comp 1

With holiday parties in full swing, it’s time to bring out those gorgeous red lips! Here are a few of my favorites, and I’ve divided them into mattes and satins/glosses. Also, just for a little added holiday fun, I’ll be giving away a makeup bag and two of these lipsticks! Details on how to enter will be listed at the bottom of this post. Keep reading to find your perfect holiday lip and enter the giveaway!

These mattes comprise my go-to for a bold lip. I generally prefer a matte finish on a bold lip because it adds that retro look, which I love. The formulas are all different, some with better staying power than others. So, let’s start from the back row.

Back row:

Bite Lip Crayon in Winterberry — I love this formula because it’s super creamy and extremely pigmented. While Bite markets it as a matte color, I find that the creamy formula doesn’t really give you that hard matte finish (compare with the MAC RIRi Woo), but it’s not a true satin finish either. It doesn’t have great staying power, so you will have to reapply, but it doesn’t dry out your lips like a lot of the matte formulations do. I did a full post on the Bite Beauty Best Bite Remix Holiday Gift Set when I picked up these mini versions. The Winterberry is such a beautiful deep fuchsia if you aren’t 100% enamored by red. This color is great for fair skin and olive skin. If you have deep red undertones, I might steer clear of this one and go more for a darker blue-red like the NYX one. Nonetheless, this color is perfectly suited for a holiday party bold lip. I imagine this one paired with an emerald green cocktail dress.

MAC Matte in Diva — I love this color, but it’s a “dare to wear” sort of color because it’s a little edgy. Diva is a deep red-plum-wine that leans more on the purple side than on the red side. It really takes me back to that 90s red-brown lip. It’s deeper and richer than the average dark red, and is great for olive toned skin. I find this one really hard to pull off when I get super pale in winter, so if you’re very fair, this might not be the one for you. While it has great staying power, it’s not drying.

Bite Lip Crayon in Pomegranate — This one is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Its a true red that leans on the side of pink. That works super well for my pale winter skin. This one would be killer with a little black dress!

Front row:

MAC RiRi Woo — This is my all time favorite red lipstick. Unfortunately, it’s limited edition from last year, and I will be so so unhappy when I finally run out of it. The formula is super matte, which can be really drying, so I exfoliate and heavily condition my lips prior to using this RiRi Woo. The super matte finish is super retro and very feminine. The red is a straight down the middle blue red, which always makes your teeth look whiter! While finding the right shade of red lipstick is like finding the right man, I think this one would flatter almost all skintones. Oh, and it lasts forever!! I went to brunch with a friend where we sipped mimosas, ate, and chatted for nearly two hours, and this stuff did not budge. While this particular color isn’t currently available, it’s near match from MAC is RubyWoo, which is always available.

NYX Matte in Alabama — As an LSU fan, it pained me to purchase a lipstick called Alabama, but when it comes to beauty, I cannot discriminate. Alabama isn’t as matte as the MAC Riri Woo, but it is definitely matte. The color is a little deeper and more orange-y than the rest featured here. With great staying power, and available at the drug store, this is one to add to your collection.

Not Pictured in the composite above:

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush — I didn’t include this with the Mattes composite picture because it’s not really matte and it’s not really satin, so it doesn’t fit in either category here. It’s a stain, as suggested by its name. This is a great stain for anyone who wants to be adventurous without going completely bold. Because it’s a stain, it lasts a very long time, and has a minty feel on the lips. While Revlon markets it as a moisturizing balm, it does not have the moisture I would hope, but to get the color payoff and the lasting power, you have to compromise somewhere! Crush is a light eggplant-wine based red which is great on fair skin!

Now, let’s take a look at the Satins and the Glosses!

Again, we will start with the back row.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Lasting Creme in Scarlet Siren — This is a beautiful true red. The Estee Lauder formula is so moisturizing that it can get a little slippery and bleedy around the mouth. For that, I’d recommend using a lip liner to help prevent the color from migrating. Otherwise, it’s a truly gorgeous red that almost looks glossy! A perfect match to your little black dress!

Revlon Lip Butter in Red Velvet — This might be the most moisturizing, long lasting, well pigmented color I’ve ever found. To combine all of those aspects into one lipstick is pretty impressive. What you cannot see in the photo is that this lipstick is nearly done. I may have a few more wears of it before I need to repurchase it. Because it’s so moisturizing and not super super bold, I wear it regularly in the fall and winter. It’s definitely not outright red, and wears on the plum/eggplant side. The picture does not do this color justice, despite the use of natural light. Because of the formula, it is definitely a build-able color so you can decide how dark you want it to get.

Rimmel by Kate Moss in 01 — Admittedly, I often forget about this one. I love it, but it doesn’t go on smoothly if your lips are in any way chapped or slightly dry. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful blue-red with a hint of pink that falls somewhere between a satin and a matte finish, without being too shiny or too matte. What I love about this Rimmel line is that they are extremely long lasting. So, if you’re headed to a party where there will be eating and drinking, this is a great choice.

Revlon Fifth Avenue Red — This one by Revlon is the non-matte match to the MAC RiRi Woo/Ruby Woo. I love that I have that option to choose between matte or satin. Fifth Avenue Red is exactly what it claims to be — that bold red you think about with a bright red apple — Big Apple, anyone? This color launched with their Legacy Collection as their best color of 1958. I think that’s pretty cool — knowing I’m wearing a color that was legitimately popular in 1958. It’s super pigmented, and has decent staying power, but you will need to drop it into your purse because you will need to re-apply after a few drinks/eats.

Front row:

Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in Big Bang — Talk about amazing formula and applicator. I have several colors in this Rimmel line, and I absolutely love them. The doe foot applicator makes it a cinch to get on, and while it looks and feels glossy, it stays put ALL DAY LONG. Lacquer is the perfect way to describe this product because it has that intense color combined with high shine and the long lasting effect. However, this color is going to be a hint on the orange side of true red. Orange-y reds tend to look great on people with medium skin tones.

Givenchy Gloss Interdit Ultra Shiny Lip Plumping Effect in Rouge Passion #12 — Givenchy nails holiday with this color. The gloss is thick and bright cherry red with glitter in it. Don’t panic about the glitter…you know Givenchy is not going to have you looking like a 1997 JNCO-wearing glitter child. Think of it as sophisticated glitter usage — It’s just enough glitter to really reflect light to make your lips look larger and plumper to truly highlight that red lip! The formula also contains some Givenchy skincare ingredients so it leaves your lips super soft and kissable. You’ll notice that this one smells so wonderful. Sephora explains the scent as “top notes of bergamot, litchi, and red fruit; middle notes of rose, jasmine, and lily of the valley; and base notes of sandalwood, vanilla, amber, and musk.” Yes. Your gloss will make you smell great too! Perfect for finding some mistletoe to hang out under!
